Measures Platelet Factor 4 (PF4) in platelet depleted human plasma.
PF4 is released from activated platelet alpha granules upon platelet activation. PF4 possesses a powerful anti-heparin activity as it binds to heparin, forming a stochiometric complex. Elevated levels of PF4 are observed in various situations associated with platelet activation, such as inflammatory or infectious diseases, Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC), shock, polycythemia vera, cerebrovascular disorders, extra-corporeal circulation, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, renal disease and cancer. Decreased PF4 levels are observed inpatients with Gray Platelet Syndrome, a type of platelet storage pool defect.
